How To: Polish Chrome with a Tiny Budget

13 May 2014

We all hate rusty or dull chrome parts. However, this is a very common issue on older motorcycles, which are often the base for a Café Racer.

If you ignore it, you will have to throw the parts away at some point, which would be quite a waste of money.

So, how do you solve this problem? With something unexpected!

Here is what you need:

  • Coca Cola (or a cheaper brand). We recommend Diet Coke as it is said to be less sticky.
  • Aluminium foil
  • Paper towels
  • Rusty or dull chrome parts
  • Warm water

Pour the Diet Coke on the rusty chrome parts, then crumple up some foil and scrub the rust off with it.

Once you are done, rinse the part with warm water and wipe it dry.

The results are mind-blowing. Be aware that the pictures make the part look scratchier than it actually is.

We would not recommend using this technique on an expensive motorcycle, but it can be a cheap and useful alternative for some old chrome parts.
