What are exhaust pipes made of? How much heat can they handle?

When it comes to motorcycle exhaust systems, you can usually pick from a few materials: chrome, steel, aluminum, titanium, or carbon fiber. But these days, manufacturers can pretty much create any look you want! Here at Cafe Racer Webshop, we sell stainless steel as a more popular choice, as it is known for its affordability, durability and long lifespan. Stainless steel is relatively heavier than aluminum, another popular choice we have. While aluminum is lighter and also budget friendly, it does not provide the same durability as stainless steel.

1. Pipes: The exhaust pipes, typically made of stainless steel, carry the gases from the manifold through the rest of the system. They come in different sizes and shapes depending on your bike and how much performance you're aiming for.
2. Exhaust Manifold: This is where the gases first come out of the engine and get directed to the pipes. It could connect to one cylinder or multiple, depending on the bike. Stainless steel is usually the go-to material, but you can customize it if you want something different.
3. Catalytic Converter: This part, which is mostly found on newer bikes, takes the nasty stuff like carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides and converts them into less harmful gases like nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. This makes the exhaust much safer for you and the environment.

The temperature of your bike’s exhaust can vary a lot, depending on things like the weather, how hard you’re pushing the engine, and even your speed. It can range from about 150°C to as hot as 870°C (300°F-1600°F).
