A slightly lighter mid-range model to attract younger drivers in particular was missing from the series and with its tight air-cooled two-cylinder boxer engine it could compete excellently against its Italian and Japanese competitors. Although the BMW R65 was originally released as a touring motorbike, it became a bit better after several modifications and several of these models could also compete as a sports and all-road motorbike. As a result, the BMW R65 RT was especially released for the French police, the BMW R65 LS was slightly more powerful and sporty, the BMW R65 Mono and BMW R65 RT Mono were released with a monolever instead of the usual swingarm and next that a lighter version of the BMW R80 GS, a heavy allroader, came on the market with the BMW R65 GS.
