Motobatt

A cafe racer, scrambler or classic motorcycle needs a battery that starts reliably and still fits the cramped, often hand-built battery tray it has to live in. That is exactly what Motobatt builds. Founded in 2002, the brand works only in powersports: motorcycles, ATVs, jet skis and everything in between. From its headquarters in Jacksonville it now supplies more than 47 countries, and at Caferacerwebshop you will find the part of the range that makes the most sense for builders and riders.

QuadFlex: four terminals, more mounting freedom

Motobatt's breakthrough came in 2008 with its patented AGM QuadFlex design. Instead of two fixed terminals, a Motobatt battery has four, spread across both sides. That means the same battery connects no matter which way round it sits in the frame, and whether your loom comes out on the left or the right. On a custom build where the battery disappears under the seat, into a side box or behind the engine, that saves a lot of fiddling with extension leads. The batteries are sealed and maintenance-free: no topping up acid, no vent hose to route.

The full Motobatt range

Alongside the well-known AGM QuadFlex series, Motobatt makes gel batteries, hybrid AGM/lithium units, the lightweight Lithium HP and Lithium P lines, MFLEX+ and deep cycle batteries. That breadth matters, because not every bike wants the same thing. An original seventies twin running a dynamo and points is happiest on a traditional AGM, while a stripped-back cafe racer with minimal electronics benefits from the weight saving of lithium. Motobatt also supplies matching chargers, testers and jump starters, so you can keep the battery in condition through the winter months.

Motobatt MFLEX+: two models, endless combinations

Where most manufacturers carry dozens of case sizes, Motobatt covers almost the entire field with two MFLEX+ models. The MFX2.5 delivers 2.5 Ah and 200 CA in a block measuring 108 × 39 × 85 mm; the MFX5.0 gives 5 Ah and 350 CA at 143 × 39 × 118 mm. The thinking behind it is modular: if you need more, you simply link identical units together. Two MFX2.5 units give you 5 Ah and 400 CA, four take you to 10 Ah and 800 CA. On the MFX5.0 side that scales to 20 Ah and 1400 CA with four modules — ample cranking power for big twins, and equally at home in a car, boat or camper.

For a custom build, that modularity is worth a lot. You are no longer tied to one fixed case shape: lay the modules side by side in a shallow tray under the seat, or spread them across whatever space the frame gives you. Linking them takes no electrical expertise — same model, same connector, instant extra power.

One caveat worth knowing: MFLEX+ is specifically a starter battery. Motobatt's cross-reference chart shows per fitment whether MFLEX+ is a direct replacement. Deep discharge does it no harm, but the Ah capacity per unit is too limited for genuine deep-cycle duty. If you are running heavy accessories or need a house battery, pick from the deep cycle or AGM QuadFlex range instead.

Why Motobatt

Motobatt builds its batteries around what it calls Power Balanced Technology: a considered balance between cranking power and service life, rather than chasing the biggest number on the label. In practice that means plenty of reserve on cold mornings and a battery that lasts well beyond a single season. The brand is also active in racing, including as a partner of the KTM AJO team, where batteries take considerably more abuse than they ever will on the road.
